My boyfriend is a typical Aries—and that sentence would make him roll his eyes. Because when it comes to astrology, my hypersensitive and free-spirited BF is a serious doubter. Sound familiar?
It seems that, overall, women are naturally drawn to astrology…guys, not so much. In fact, the percentage of men who believe in astrology has actually gone down since 2009, according to the Pew Research Center (from 21 percent to 20 percent, but still!).
Ironically, many astrologers believe that the reason men aren’t interested in the zodiac can be explained by…astrology. Corey Dowds, a 32-year-old male astrologer, says it all has to do with the Sun and Moon. Each sign is split into male and female energies. Male energy is like the Sun; female energy like the Moon. “The Sun tends not to change course and needs to be consistent in order to make the seasons and life on Earth,” Dowds explains. “Men are naturally more inclined to stay the course and stick to what they already know.”
Another theory: Guys may be too—wait for it—egotistical to believe in astrology. “Women are more interested in working on themselves, and men just kind of think they already know what they’re doing,” explains 35-year-old female astrologer Ash Reed. “They’re not as open to expanding perspectives about who they are.”
According to real-life male skeptic Jordan Bishop, there just isn’t enough proof. “A friend of mine insists that it’s all very scientific, but whenever I try to understand, she gets flustered and says I need to have more faith,” explains the 27-year-old. “Doesn’t sound like science to me.”
That said, there is hope you’ll meet a guy who won’t scoff when you ask him for his sign. “I find millennials to be more open and inquisitive,” says 39-year-old astrologer Regina Chouza. “Young men are just as open as women, but we have to make astrology more grounded and practical for them.”
Astrology enthusiast Anna Mills, 22, noticed a switch in her own boyfriend sometime last year. For the first seven months of their relationship, he would mock her love of astrology and call her “insane” when she’d use it to predict travel conditions before going on trips. But he’s since changed his mind after becoming obsessed with a handful of horoscope Twitter accounts.
“We got into a pretty heated argument a few months ago,” Mills recalls, “during which he yelled, ‘It’s because you’re a Virgo and Virgos overthink everything!’ I couldn’t stop laughing.”
We can only hope that in a more evolved future, all the guys in our lives passionately use our astrological signs against us.
